I get it. You’re doing everything right. Eating clean. Skipping the junk. Moving your body. And yet…the scale won’t budge. Or worse—it creeps up. Been there, done that.

About a year ago, I thought doing kick-ass cardio was going to get me lean and in tip-top bikini shape. I was running frickin’ hurdles for God’s sake on a high school track and field course. I was also avoiding crap food. I was practicing what I was preaching to my health coaching clients. Doing all the healthy things. And yet? My body was holding on to weight. Right around the cusp of turning the big 4-0 last year, I had a lightbulb moment. Maybe my hormones were out of whack? (Spoiler alert: They totally were.)

So, I did what I do best—functional medicine investigation. Like a natural health Sherlock Holmes, I dug into my lab work, tweaked my nutrition, balanced my hormones, and guess what? It worked. I finally felt like myself again.

If you’re doing everything “right” and still not seeing results, I’m here to tell you: It’s not your fault. And no, you don’t just have to “try harder.” Here’s what’s really going on—and what to do about it.

1. You’re Eating Too Little (Or Too Much)

Yeah, I said it. Under-eating can stall weight loss just as much as over-eating. When you’re in a constant calorie deficit, your body panics and clings to fat for dear life. On the flip side, if you’re “eating clean” but still overdoing portions, that adds up too. Balance is key. Track your intake for a few days—not to obsess, but to get real about what’s going in. In my experience working with clients, it’s usually that for breakfast and lunch, people tend to not eat enough, or not eat enough lean protein and natural fat. Then a couple of hours later, cravings are impossible to ignore and you end up eating junk carbs which are stored as body fat if you don’t burn them right away with vigorous exercise.

2. Your Blood Sugar is Playing You

You might be avoiding cookies and cake, but if your meals are still spiking your blood sugar, your insulin levels are working against you. Too much insulin? Your body stores fat instead of burning it. Solution? Prioritize protein, fiber, and healthy fats at every meal. And if you want to go the extra mile, take a 10-minute walk after eating—it’s like a simple little reset button for your blood sugar.

3. Stress is Screwing with Your Metabolism

Cortisol. The stress hormone. When it’s too high for too long, it tells your body to store fat, especially in your belly. Chronic stress also messes with your sleep, which just fuels the cycle. If you’re constantly wired, anxious, or rage-texting in traffic, your cortisol levels might be running the show. Try meditation, deep breathing, or literally anything that calms you down.

4. Your Hormones Are Laughing at You

Here’s the kicker. If your hormones are out of balance, no amount of kale and cardio will fix it. I’m talking about:

Thyroid dysfunction: If your thyroid isn’t working properly, your metabolism slows to a crawl.

Estrogen dominance: Too much estrogen compared to progesterone? That leads to fat storage, especially around the hips and thighs.

Low testosterone: Ladies need it too! It helps build muscle and rev up metabolism.

Functional medicine fixes this. A simple hormone panel can show if you need support.

5. Gut Health: The Overlooked Factor

Your gut bacteria play a major role in weight regulation. If your gut microbiome–we’re talking primarily about the bacteria composition in your intestines–is off, your body may be inflamed, bloated, and holding on to weight like it’s a security blanket. Probiotics, fiber, and fermented foods can help, but sometimes you need testing to see what’s really going on.

6. You Need More Muscle (Yes, Really)

Cardio is cool, but muscle is your metabolic powerhouse. Lifting weights boosts metabolism, increases fat-burning, and reshapes your body in ways running never will. If you’ve been avoiding strength training, it’s time. Your future self will thank you. Some women are still hesitant to do resistance training for fear that it will “bulk them up.” Unless you’re lifting heavy weights and downing protein shakes like there’s no tomorrow, there’s no reason to fear looking like a bodybuilder.

7. Get In Touch With Me

So, what now? If this list made you suspiciously nod along, it’s time to dig deeper. You don’t have to guess what’s wrong. Functional medicine can identify what’s really happening in your body—hormones, metabolism, gut health, genetics, all of it.
