With July 4 and summer barbecues right around the corner, I thought it would be a good time to talk about your baby bump—or at least what looks and feels like one. The dreaded B word. Bloating.
Now look, it’s one thing to eat a couple of hot dogs, some potato salad, ice cream, and a beer (or two) and feel bloated. That’s your body saying, “Whoa, what did you just do to me?” But it’s another thing entirely to feel bloated after a clean, healthy meal—like a salad with lean protein and minimal starch. What gives?
Let’s dive into the most common causes of bloating—and how a functional medicine approach can help you reclaim your gut (and your jeans).
What Is Bloating?
Bloating is that uncomfortable feeling of fullness, tightness, or swelling in the abdomen—like you swallowed an air balloon and it’s refusing to pop. It’s not just in your head; it’s usually caused by excess gas, fluid retention, or sluggish digestion.
A study in Gastroenterology & Hepatology estimates that up to 30% of people experience frequent bloating. For some, it’s occasional. For others, it’s every darn day. Bloating can be triggered by everything from food sensitivities to gut dysbiosis (a fancy word for your good and bad gut bacteria being out of whack).
Antacids: The Wrong Fix for the Right Problem
So, what’s the go-to fix for bloating in conventional medicine? Antacids. Especially if it’s accompanied by that warm, lava-lamp feeling rising in your chest—aka acid reflux. But here’s the kicker: antacids might be the worst solution for ongoing bloating. Why? Because they neutralize stomach acid.
The real issue for many people isn’t too much stomach acid—it’s too little. Without enough acid, food doesn’t break down properly, leading to fermentation in your gut (hello gas and bloat). What your stomach needs is to digest like a champ, not go into lazy digestion mode.
A Better Bloating Battle: The Functional Medicine Approach
Functional medicine doesn’t just throw a pill at your symptoms. It asks: why are you bloated? And how can we fix that from the root?
First up: eat smaller meals. Yeah, yeah—obvious, but hear me out. Even a healthy meal can cause bloat if your digestive system’s running on low power. Think: meals with avocado (full-fat = satiating), lean protein like grilled chicken or salmon, and high-fiber veggies like broccoli or leafy greens. Bonus points if your cheese is aged—fermented foods have natural probiotics that help digestion.
Next, let’s see which natural ingredients can help. One product that may help is Iberogast, a plant-based remedy that contains herbs like chamomile, caraway, lemon balm, and peppermint. It’s backed by solid research and targets multiple digestive issues at once. Other herbs like slippery elm and marshmallow root coat and soothe the gut lining, making them favorites in my practice.
When Healthy Eating Still Leads to Bloat: Get Tested
If you’re eating clean and still looking five months pregnant by dinnertime, it’s time to dig deeper. One possible cause? SIBO—Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth. That’s when bacteria that should stay in the large intestine migrate to the small intestine and start partying with your lunch. Symptoms include gas, bloating, diarrhea, or constipation.
To figure out what’s really going on, I offer several lab tests in my practice:
- DNA Diet®: This genetic test helps personalize your diet to match your body’s unique code. Want to know if you thrive on a low-carb plan? This test tells you.
- GI Effects® Comprehensive Profile: A stool test that checks your digestive function, inflammation, and gut microbiome (aka your bacteria army).
- 208 Food Sensitivity IgG Panel: Tests your reaction to over 200 foods. Ideal for patients with varied diets or unexplained bloating.
Other Functional Medicine Strategies
Beyond testing and herbs, other tactics I often use include elimination diets, FODMAP sensitivity testing, digestive enzymes, probiotic therapy, lifestyle tweaks (like chewing slowly—seriously, it helps), and stress reduction (yes, your gut has a brain, and it gets anxious too).
