If you have never been to a functional medicine provider before, it can feel a little different from what you are used to. A typical doctor’s appointment lasts 10-15 minutes. At Fundamental Wellness of Nebraska in Norfolk, we do things differently — and many patients tell us it is the first time a provider has actually listened to them.

Here’s exactly what to expect if you are thinking about making your first appointment.

Before Your Visit

Before your first appointment, you will complete a detailed health history intake form. This is not just boxes to check — it is a comprehensive look at your symptoms, lifestyle, sleep, stress levels, diet, medications, family history, and health goals. The more thorough you are, the better. We want to understand the full picture of your health, not just the current complaint.

If you have recent lab work from your primary care provider, bring it. We will review what is there — and often identify patterns that did not get flagged because individual values were technically ‘within normal range.’

During Your First Visit

Your first appointment with Nurse Practitioner Jenna Witt is typically 45-60 minutes. She will review your history, ask follow-up questions, and spend time understanding not just your symptoms but the context around them — your stress load, your relationships, your work environment, your sleep, your nutrition patterns.

Physical examination, vital signs, and a thorough discussion of what we are looking for and why all happen in this visit. By the end, you will have a clear understanding of what we suspect is going on, what testing we recommend, and what the initial treatment direction looks like.

Testing: Going Deeper Than Conventional Labs

Functional medicine testing goes well beyond a basic metabolic panel and CBC. Depending on your presentation, we may recommend:

  • Comprehensive hormone panel — estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA-S, cortisol
  • Advanced thyroid panel — Free T3, Free T4, Reverse T3, thyroid antibodies
  • Metabolic markers — fasting insulin, HbA1c, lipid particle size and count
  • Nutrient status — vitamin D, B12, magnesium, iron/ferritin
  • Inflammatory markers — hs-CRP, homocysteine
  • DNA/genetic testing — for personalized diet, supplement, and medication guidance

After Your Labs Come In

You’ll have a follow-up visit to review results and build your personalized treatment plan. This plan may include dietary recommendations, targeted supplementation, lifestyle protocols, and — if appropriate — medical interventions like GLP-1 therapy, hormone support, or peptide therapy.

Everything is explained in plain language. We do not just tell you what to do — we explain why, so you actually understand your own body.

Do We Accept Insurance?

Fundamental Wellness of Nebraska works with most major insurance plans for medical appointments. Some specialty testing, supplements, and services may be out-of-pocket, but we’ll always be transparent about costs before ordering anything.
