Unless you’ve been living in a high-carb cave, you’ve probably heard of Ozempic by now. Same with Wegovy. Maybe you’ve even heard of the new GLP-1 drug, Retatrutide. Maybe you’ve heard friends talking about Ozempic and similar drugs. Now doubt you’ve seen the commercials and quietly wondered if you, too, should be taking this secret sauce that everyone else seems to be on (especially celebrities).

But slow down for a second.

Ozempic and similar medications like Wegovy belong to a class of drugs called GLP-1 receptor agonists. In simple terms, they mimic a natural hormone in your body that helps regulate blood sugar and appetite. They can:

  • Slow how fast food leaves your stomach
  • Help your pancreas release insulin more effectively
  • Reduce appetite and cravings
  • Improve blood sugar levels

For people with Type 2 diabetes or significant insulin resistance, they can be incredibly helpful. But for some people, Ozempic and similar drugs can cause side effects such as muscle wasting. And once you decide to take a GLP-1 agonist, you need to take it for life. Otherwise once you stop, you’ll gain the weight back.

Continuous Glucose Monitors: A Viable Alternative To GLP-1s?

There are alternatives to a life-long sentence of having very little appetite while you’re on GLP-1 drugs. (Food is one of life’s great pleasures, so should we really be denying ourselves?)

One alternative is wearing a Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM). A CGM is a small sensor you wear on the back of your arm that tracks your glucose levels 24/7.

Most people only know their blood sugar levels when they get their annual physical and lab work.

But CGM devices like the Dexcom G7 and Freestyle Libre 3 send readings directly to your phone. You can see how your body responds to breakfast, stress, sleep, workouts, and even that “healthy” snack you thought was harmless.

It’s real-time metabolic feedback.

And it’s often eye-opening.

How CGMs Can Help Women 40+

A lot of women come to me saying:

“I’m eating healthy.”
“I’m not overeating.”
“I’m exercising.”
“Why isn’t this working anymore?”

Hormones change in perimenopause and menopause. Estrogen affects insulin sensitivity. Cortisol affects glucose levels. Sleep disruption affects everything.

What worked at 35 doesn’t necessarily work at 48.

A CGM helps us see whether:

  • You’re experiencing hidden glucose spikes
  • You’re crashing mid-afternoon
  • Stress is driving your numbers up
  • Poor sleep is elevating fasting glucose
  • You have early insulin resistance that hasn’t shown up on labs yet

That information changes the entire strategy. Wearing a CGM is like having your own Sherlock Holmes on the case!

Discipline vs Medication

Many people think weight gain or blood sugar problems are about discipline.

But here’s what I’ve seen over and over again:

You cannot out-discipline unstable blood sugar.

If your glucose spikes high after a meal and crashes two hours later, your brain will scream for carbs. That’s just basic physiology not weakness or a lack of discipline/will power.

GLP-1 medications help blunt those spikes and reduce appetite. They can be powerful tools. But sometimes, not always, but sometimes, small adjustments can dramatically flatten glucose curves:

When patients see their glucose curve flatten in real time, it feels like a win. For some women, that’s enough; they learn what foods and food combinations help them prevent blood sugar spikes and crashes.

For other women, however, CGM data confirms that medication is appropriate and beneficial.

As a Functional Medicine Practitioner, I always emphasize that the key is to never guess, but test and measure.

What Surprises People Most

Here are a few things my patients didn’t expect:

  • Oatmeal spikes some women more than dessert.
  • Stress alone can raise glucose 20–30 points.
  • A short post-dinner walk lowers next-morning fasting glucose.
  • Strength training improves blood sugar the next day.
  • Sleep deprivation raises numbers even if food doesn’t change.

You can’t see that from a calorie tracker. But you can read about these results in peer-reviewed journals, and better yet, see it with your own eyes on a CGM.

Before You Assume You “Need” Ozempic

GLP-1 medications like Ozempic can absolutely be part of a smart treatment plan. I prescribe them when appropriate. But I don’t start with blind prescriptions. I start with data.

Because sometimes what looks like a willpower problem is actually:

  • Reactive hypoglycemia
  • Early insulin resistance
  • Stress physiology
  • Hormonal shifts
  • Sleep-driven glucose disruption

These metabolic dysfunctions require a rebalancing strategy instead of shame.

Tired of Guessing? Let’s Look at What Your Body Is Actually Doing

Struggling with weight gain, cravings, energy crashes or blood sugar swings? Wondering whether medication is the answer? Let’s find out instead of guessing.

We can use a Continuous Glucose Monitor, targeted labs, and a clear plan to determine whether lifestyle shifts are enough or whether GLP-1 therapy makes sense for you.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer.
