I’m a Nurse Practitioner in a crazy busy ER in Norfolk, Nebraska. I’ve got four kids, for which I run a non-profit rideshare, shuttling my boys to wrestling matches like a part-time job. I eat healthy, I move my body (hurdles, as in the track and field sprint your butt off and leap over a hurdle, hurdles), and, when it comes to physiology, I know my stuff. And yet—there was a time when my metabolism straight-up ghosted me.
Despite doing everything right, my body wasn’t burning fat. I was running on fumes. And don’t get my husband, Preston, started on my mood swings? When you’re juggling a medical career, four kids, and a health coaching practice, you do not have time for a broken metabolism.
So, I did what I do best—I got to the root of the problem. No fad diets, no gimmicks, just functional medicine. Just like a cobbler who knows it’s time to repair his own shoes, I knew it was time for me to practice what I preached.
I got under the hood of my body by running some lab tests, and guess what? It worked. If you’re stuck in metabolic chaos—gaining weight, feeling exhausted, or watching your workouts do nothing—here’s what’s really happening. And more importantly, here’s how to fix it.
Your Hormones Are Running the Show
If your metabolism is dragging, your hormones might be the ringleaders of this circus. Cortisol, insulin, thyroid hormones, estrogen, and testosterone all play huge roles in how your body burns (or stores) fat.
Cortisol (The Stress Hormone)
Chronic stress cranks this up, telling your body to store fat, especially in your belly. If you’re wired but tired, constantly anxious, or waking up at 3 a.m. like a vampire, your cortisol is likely a problem. Over the course of the day, your cortisol levels should gradually fluctuate, with levels highest in the morning and pretty much flat-lined by evening. However, for many people, even if cortisol is high in the morning, there’s a crash in the afternoon, followed by a spike in the evening.
Insulin (The Fat Storage Hormone)
Too many blood sugar spikes? Your cells stop listening to insulin, and instead of using energy efficiently, your body shoves everything into fat storage mode.
Thyroid (The Metabolism Boss)
If your thyroid is sluggish, everything slows down—fat burning, digestion, energy levels, you name it. Unfortunately, your regular doctor’s “normal” thyroid test doesn’t always catch it.
Estrogen & Testosterone (Sex Hormones)
Too much estrogen and not enough testosterone? Say hello to fat storage, mood swings, and muscle loss. Or, if you are peri- or postmenopausal, it could be that you don’t have enough progesterone to balance estrogen if you’re taking estrogen hormone therapy.
How to Fix It: Get your hormones checked. Not just the basic labs—comprehensive panels. Functional medicine tests like the ones I offer dig deeper to find exactly what’s off and how to fix it.
You’re Riding the Blood Sugar Rollercoaster
If you’re constantly hungry, craving sugar, and hitting energy crashes mid-afternoon, your blood sugar is running the show. Even if you think you’re eating healthy, sneaky carbs and processed foods can spike insulin and set you up for an energy crash.
How to Fix It:
- Prioritize protein, healthy fats, and fiber at every meal to slow down sugar absorption.
- Take a walk after eating to help clear glucose from your bloodstream.
- Cut out inflammatory seed oils (canola, soybean, corn)—they wreck insulin sensitivity.
Your Gut Health is Screwing You Over
Your gut bacteria control metabolism, hunger hormones, and inflammation. If your gut is out of balance (thanks to stress, antibiotics, or crappy food choices), your body holds on to weight and cranks up cravings. Over the last few years, research has shown that some strains of bacteria in the gut promote obesity, while others support a healthy metabolism.
How to Fix It:
- Eat fermented foods (sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir) for beneficial bacteria.
- Ditch processed junk—bad gut bacteria love sugar and refined carbs.
- Consider gut testing if bloating, gas, or constipation are constant battles.
You’re Over-Exercising, Not Exercising Enough (Or Not Exercising Right)
Cardio queens, listen up. Running miles on end does not equal fat loss if your metabolism is already under-performing. Overdoing cardio can spike cortisol, making fat loss harder. And if you’re avoiding strength training? That’s a mistake. Muscle is key to burning fat.
Obviously, though, the problem with most people is that they don’t move their bodies enough. One reason is that they don’t know which type of activity is ideal for their unique biochemistry. In other words, one person’s 10-mile run is another person’s poison. After you take the lab tests, I’ll order them for you, and I will review with you what the best type of activity is for you.
How to Fix It:
- Strength train 3-4x per week. More muscle = a faster metabolism.
- Keep cardio in check. Walking, hiking, or short bursts of high-intensity work are best.
- Don’t ignore recovery. Overtraining can slow metabolism—balance is everything.
You’re Not Sleeping
Yes, “fatsomnia” is a thing. Bad sleep = weight gain. Period. If you’re not getting enough restorative sleep, studies show that your body makes more ghrelin (the hunger hormone) and less leptin (the fullness hormone). The end result? You eat more and burn less.
How to Fix It:
- Ditch the screens at night. Blue light wrecks melatonin production.
- Cut caffeine after 2 p.m. Yes, even if you think it doesn’t affect you.
- Get sunlight first thing in the morning. It helps regulate your sleep-wake cycle.
You’re Eating Too Little (Yes, Really)
Eating too few calories tanks your metabolism. Your body thinks it’s starving and slows everything down, holding on to fat instead of burning it. If you’ve been dieting forever, your body may have adapted to fewer calories, meaning you need a metabolic reset.
How to Fix It:
- Cycle your calories. Some days, eat more (especially on strength training days).
- Eat enough protein. It protects muscles, boosts metabolism, and keeps you full.
- Take a break from dieting. Seriously, sometimes the answer is eating more.
Get to the Root of Your Metabolism Issues!
You could keep guessing. Or, you could actually figure out what’s wrong. Your hormones, gut health, and blood sugar all play a role in weight loss—and if something’s off, no amount of kale smoothies or cardio will fix it.
As a Nurse Practitioner and Functional Medicine expert, I help people solve this every day. If you’re in Northeast Nebraska, let’s check your labs, balance your hormones, and finally get your metabolism working for you, not against you. The first step? Scheduling an appointment. Let’s get you feeling like yourself again!
I’m currently accepting new clients at the Diabetes & Wellness Clinic in Norfolk, which accepts insurance.
